Mandaluyong distributes hundreds of food packs

Mandaluyong City started the distribution of grocery packs to city residents in dire need of help during the “enhanced community quarantine.”

“We have started the distribution of grocery packs to almost 2,500 families tonight (Thursday),” Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita Abalos said.

The city government earlier said that they will distribute 100,000 grocery bags to its less fortunate residents, which will be given on a weekly basis for a month.

Jimmy Isidro, City Public Information Office chief and chief of staff of the mayor, said that the grocery packs contained rice, canned goods, sugar, coffee, and other grocery items.

“The grocery packs will be good for one week,” Isidro said. “It will be distributed door-to-door by our barangay officials.”

Barangay officials and personnel will distribute the food packs because people are not allowed to go out due to the “enhanced community quarantine” being implemented, the city official explained.

This is done also to avoid people queuing for food packs which defeats the purpose of social distancing imposed by the government due to the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Meanwhile, the city mayor said the distribution of grocery packs on Thursday was only partial, saying that more will be distributed soon.

In her Facebook page, Abalos said they are still waiting for the delivery of goods that will be included in the food packs.

“Gayunpaman, patuloy po at agaran ang pagrepack ng mga goods sa oras na sila ay dumarating sa ating tanggapan. Asahan nyo po ang aming pagdating sa inyong mga barangay sa lalong madaling panahon,” Abalos said.
